The Brief
Compass Cottage is a National Trust-owned holiday rental property nestled within a leafy woodland setting behind Dartmouth Castle, enjoying spectacular views across the River Dart. As a classic example of a historic worker's cottage, the property held significant heritage value, with many original features still intact.
The brief was to undertake a sensitive and comprehensive refurbishment that would preserve the building's character and historical significance while transforming it into a comfortable, high-quality holiday retreat for modern guests. The project required careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, and a long-term commitment to conservation, all while enhancing the property's functionality and sustainability.
Our Work
Project Management & Building etc delivered a full refurbishment programme over a two-year period, overseeing every aspect of the project from inception to completion.
Acting as both project manager and principal contractor, we coordinated designers, specialist trades, and highly skilled local craftspeople to ensure every stage of the restoration met the highest standards. Traditional conservation techniques were employed throughout, allowing us to retain and restore many of the cottage's original features, including its historic fireplace, doors, and windows.
Working closely with heritage specialists and local artisans, we carefully balanced the preservation of the cottage's historic character with the introduction of modern comforts. Alongside extensive restoration works, we carried out all required building works, ensuring the property remained authentic while meeting contemporary expectations.
A key element of the project was the creation of a roof extension, providing a stunning new master suite with panoramic countryside views. Additional improvements included the installation of an electric vehicle charging point, supporting more sustainable travel for guests.
The interior design was thoughtfully curated to reflect the property's maritime heritage, featuring Dartmouth-inspired artwork by local artists, bespoke lighting, and carefully selected finishes that celebrate the cottage's connection to its surroundings.
The Outcome
The completed refurbishment has transformed Compass Cottage into a beautiful and characterful holiday destination that honours its history while delivering exceptional comfort and practicality.
Set across three floors, the property now features a spacious, light-filled kitchen and dining area, a welcoming sitting room, a luxurious master suite, and two additional bedrooms, creating ample space for families and groups to enjoy.
